Saints fill needs on defense

Like the other NFL teams, the New Orleans Saints are putting the final touches on the roster they will take to training camp in July.

NFL teams get better or worse with personnel decisions made from February through July. There will still be trades and free-agent signings made after the draft, but for the most part, what is on your roster today will either win or lose for you in the fall.

When the Saints season ended in December, virtually everyone felt the team needed to upgrade their secondary, add a potential starter at weakside linebacker, upgrade the talent level along the defensive line and add a big running back.

With free-agent signees in cornerback Jabari Greer and free safety Darren Sharper already on the roster, it was still a no-brainer that the Saints would select Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins in the first round if he was available.

When I first did a mock draft in late January, I wondered if the Ohio State All-American would still be around with the 14th overall selection and felt the Saints may have to turn to the outside linebacker slot to fill in Round 1.
