Who's militant? It's kinda hard not to defend your viewpoint when people are all the time telling you that you're going to hell if you don't go to their church or that you can't possibly be moral if you don't believe in God. That's just silly.

If you don't believe there's a hell, then why would you get upset if someone insisted you were heading there? Some would consider that just as silly.
It's like the Iron Bowl hoopla. I'm neither a 'Bama or an Auburn fan. The whole brouhaha doesn't affect me one way or the other. I'm the same way with those who worship at the altar of NASCAR. The only time it affects me any is Talladega race weekends...and I just avoid going anywhere near the interstate on those days.
