I hear what you are saying, but I think that they are selling sports fans short -- and they just may pay a price for it at some point.

I don't know of any fan who would not prefer a good segement breaking down the X's and O's. Heck, I would even watch a breakdown of the Brown's.

But, this "shock commentary" is easier and cheaper I am sure.

You're exactly right about that and I agree with you. The problem is that they want to appeal to casual fans and the simple truth is that while I might drool over anaylsis of defensive line vs offensive line matchups, my wife would get more out of getting all riled up about "did you hear what they said about the Saints today?" and she represents the casual fan.
