Too early for Saints to start playoff talk

METAIRIE — The New Orleans Saints are halfway through their schedule, and at 6-2 they are more than halfway to the number of victories they’ll likely need to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2000.

Splitting the final eight games, beginning with the one against the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers on Sunday in <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 /><ST1:CITY><ST1:PLACE>Pittsburgh</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY>, would give the Saints a 10-6 record.

Since the NFL went to its current playoff field in 1990, teams that have won 10 games have qualified for the playoffs 92.3 percent of the time. Teams with nine wins have made it 51.7 percent of the time, and teams with eight wins, only 11.7 percent of the time.
