Why give up a pick when he was gonna get cut?

From what I gather , there were 3 teams in the bidding one of them being Atlanta, all were offering 7ths rounders. Our 7th is less appealing cause its at the bottom of the round. So we gave up a 6th (which is what 5 picks from being a 7th) Upped the ante' and we called it a day, done deal. No bidding war, no risk losing the player we are targeting.

I don't know what the other team is, but Atlanta doesn't have a 7th round pick (other than an a Compensatory selection.) We actually have their seventh from the Wayne Gandy trade (I think). Our 7th is pick 220, while we gave up the 199th pick.

I think that Randy Mueller was pushing for a sixth rounder, which they lost in some trade with the Broncos. We were the only team of the three willing to give up our sixth.

I think it was a good trade. We needed a reliable long ball kicker and now we have one. It is not ideal to have to draft a kicker who would need to be developed, which is not helpful for a superbowl run.

Also, even if he is cut, there would be more competition for his services and we may have to go into a bidding war for his services and possibly lose out. Which means we do not get the long ball kicker we desperately need. I think if you are trying to make a superbowl run it is important to be aggressive and losing a sixth round pick for a championship caliber team is not going to hurt one bit.
