For whatever reason, some people still view Brees as an outsider to the 'Elite' club. These are the same people who would vote against Brees into the HOF as a 1st balloter...or at all. With that belief, they can't reconcile that a non-elite QB could have possibly broken such a cherished record as Dan Marino's and so they manufacture reasons why Dan's record should remain unspoiled in perpetuity. (i.e. record means nothing these days, new record 'not so special'. They never truly address the Whys of the situation, only give a cursory analysis because they idolized Marino growing up)
But yeah, I don't expect the same conversation when Brady passes Marino's mark this coming week. It'll be like "See? Brees isn't so special - the most Elite QB in the league came really close to the same mark that Brees set".
