Fox Sports' John Czarnecki: Brees overestimating his worth

Like others have said the writer's basic premise is correct - Brees/Condon rumored contract demands are overestimating his worth. Brees clearly deserves a contract in line with what Brady/Manning received but not millions more a season than both (and the Saints must protect themselves by not crippling themselves with guaranteed money). Brees is incredibly valuable make no mistake but even that has it's limits.

The problem with this article is the writer's attempt at supporting his basic premise -

1.) Brees is a product of the Saints system. Um no. Like all great QBs, Brees can play any system. His skills would be wasted as "game manager" or "run first" scheme but he could play in them. It just so happens that Brees is the perfect fit in Payton's "multiple read, quick react" Offense.

2.) Brees' size. Talk about a dead horse. I wonder if at 6' 1" Joe Montana would be treated the same by the press today.

3.) Turnovers. The author finally hits on a semi valid point. Brees has accounted for more TO's than the two guys whose contracts are being used as a yardstick. But Brees productivity since 2006 is greater than both.

4.) The author's train goes completely off the tracks with this statement - "Yes, Brees has proved his worth, but he’s not worth more than Manning and Brady, who each average about $18 million a season. Heck, Ben Roethlisberger, Rodgers and Eli Manning are better quarterbacks than Brees because they can play in any NFL system." Rodgers is in the Brady, P. Manning (pre injury), Brees "elite" QB discussion. Eli Manning would struggle in Sean Payton's Offense and the ultimate "game manager" QB Roethlisberger would be a complete disaster. The reason Roethlisberger and E. Manning have been successful is because their Offenses play to their strengths.

Shame he used such ridiculous evidence and just didn't stick with - "The word is that Brees wants an average salary surpassing $20 million a season, a financial number to make up for the fact the Saints paid him only $10 million a season when no one else wanted him after a horrific throwing shoulder injury in San Diego in 2006. The Saints believe they are entitled to a slight discount because they took a chance on Brees."
