Saints' Brees not typical quarterback

Teammates high on signal-caller’s leadership role

METAIRIE — Two of the top quarterbacks in the NFL will be on the Superdome field Sunday when Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints play Carson Palmer and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Palmer (6-foot-5, 230 pounds), like many of his NFL quarterbacking colleagues, wins the tale of the tape against Brees (6-0, 209), but like most of his colleagues, he can’t match Brees’ productivity this season.

Brees doesn’t fit the physical attributes of the NFL quarterback prototype. But if the NFL doesn’t have an all-around prototype that fits Brees, it needs to get one.

He has passed for an NFL-best 2,604 yards and has the sixth-highest passer rating (95.8) among regular starters. He is unquestionably the No. 1 reason, along with new coach Sean Payton and his staff, that the Saints are 6-3, leading the NFC South, and perhaps the biggest surprise in the NFL after 10 weeks.
