Cutting the cable, lets talk options and media setups
Just moved and got a new Smart TV and currently not under a contract with DirecTV cuz they swapped my box out during the mover's special which made me lose all of my saved shows, etc. I've found some sites that work great for movies and shows but yea my biggest issue is live sports. I'd love to be able to cut the cable though so I'm going to do some heavy reading in here.
Depending on your local stations service signals you will pick up most local NFL/college games through antenna.
I get NBC, Fox, CBS beautiful HD picture through my antenna (did you know you get a much better picture through Antenna signals that broadcast in HDTV because they are not decompressed, and recompressed for your screen via cable). Most new smart TVs have built in receivers that you could probably get a few of the stronger signals directly through that.
Live sports was my biggest draw back at first, but now I stream most of my sports. In the event there is something on I really want to watch and I can't get, I go to the local sports bar. Even the money spent on beer/food while there won't come close to what I was dishing out for cable. Plus i'm out having fun, and i'd be spending money for food and drink watching the game anyways sitting at home.
Try it for a month, I doubt you go back. Ive never seen anyone go back after cutting the cord. We just find more convienent ways to stream stuff. Companies are taking notice and some are already catering to our needs, most if not all will follow suit in some capacity. HBO, Showtime have taken the leap, and more and more projects are signing up with companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Crackle to play exclusive content only available through streaming.
Your on the ledge already...one more step.
