I think it's fine to use black as a descriptor when needed. Adding the word black when it's not needed, especially when speaking with vitriol, is insensitive.
:Me and Bob are going to lunch." "Which Bob?" "The black guy." Acceptable IMO.
Bob walks by and I tell my coworker "I hate that black SOB" Insensitive.
Someone in Gayle's position should know better.
