Or is it just nice and convenient to ignore those 2 years of Atrocious Defense (ie, ranked at the BOTTOM of the league) and years of Awful contracts by the FO.

What you're calling "really aweful football" is really just mediocre football. Those defenses were bad. But the offenses were extremely good. remember that one play from earlier in the year when Breaux lost the ball in the lights? Or when he fell and gave up that long TD against Indy? Those types of freak plays were common occurrences back in the 70!s and 80's. We were a real life blooper real. Thankfully, I'm not old enough to have experienced the 70's and I'm only barely old enough to vaguely remember the early/mid 80's. We were actually fairly good in the latter part of the 80's and early 90's. But before that, those freak plays were all we had to look forward to, or remember. "Remember that game when....?"
