Saints Sign Ex-Browns LB Craig Robertson, 3 year deal (merged)

It kind of depends on the scheme. In a 4-3 some defenses like to blitz the WILL because they are often unblocked on the line and/or are blocked by the RB lined up in the back field. A SAM LBer maybe asked to set the edge and engage the TE. They also often have to cover the TE off the line p, so if can negate the SAM's ability to pass rush.

It,is a little different in the 3-4 because most teams rush 4 anyway and a team can get a little more creative with where they are sending them. So a SAM can be more flexible in coverage and pass rushing.

Of course this is all scheme dependent regardless of alignment.

I get what you are saying..but to take from another poster...we signed 3 off ball LBs. In a 3-4 the Sam is going to be on ball a lot more than off ball vs a 4-3 where the sam will be off ball more than on ball.

Speaking strictly in base form as they all shift but yeah..it's a 4-3 bro. Like I said Robertson is one of those ascending players(or u hope he is)and Ellerbe is on the way down

Think of Robertson as a 2nd/3rd round pick. Might take a sec for him to take over..might take an injury..or he might win it in camp...but he has that upside and Ellerbe is on borrowed time.
