Over the air broadcast waves are not decompressed. Your antenna pulls directly from that signal for viewing. You get the best quality picture possible.

Cable, even HD take those same signals and compress them and relay them to the cable box which decompresses them for viewing.

Guests are always shocked to find out we don't have cable. I have the antennae in the attic, so you don't see it in the living room. And the TV is hooked to my surround sound system. So a typical NFL game is in Dolby Digital 5.1. It's pretty awesome.
