All in the Family is one of my favorites and it's because of Archie Bunker (even though Edith is a perfect foil as his "dumb" but so wise wife). The way the show used his ignorance in normal conversation to undercut his prejudice and racism was just such clever writing. Carol O'Conner played him perfectly. In fact his parody of a blue collar working class bigot is where a character like Stephan Colbert's has it roots.
Archie is the 50's everyman America coming face to face with changing attitudes and culture, desperately trying to hold on to his view of what America should be. And again, it's perfect: (wish I knew how to embed and skip ahead about 10 seconds)
