Jeopardy: Fair or Foul?

I remember last year in a junior championship game a kid got the correct answer, but misspelled i by one letter. He would have won, but it was considered an error and he lost the finals. Yet I have seen other games where a word was misspelled and it was accepted. There seems to be some inconsistency in the game decisions.
