I agree with Ward. I think he just went straight for the biggest part of the target. I think being able to get up close and personal was just an added bonus to him as he pushed it in.
The directors said he aimed for the chest so that he could have a moment to tell Thanos that he got his revenge. They also said had he aimed for the head he would have killed Thanos.
