Saints behind the 8-ball after another inexcusable season debut

NEW ORLEANS -- This was supposed to be the year it all changed. Memories from a litany of bad starts would fade into one glorious celebration and hope following the 2018 home opener at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The NFL placed this on a tee for Drew Brees and Co.

Sunday, the New Orleans Saints kicked off the season with a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a 5-11 team in 2017 without its starting quarterback, a suspended Jameis Winston.

Someone forgot to inform the Buccaneers about the plan.

Tampa Bay, 10-point underdogs (the largest spread in the NFL in Week 1), steamrolled the Saints, 48-40, and gutted the Who Dats – including the 73,038 in attendance -- en route to one of New Orleans’ most puzzling defeats in the Sean Payton/Brees era....
