Job situation update

Any news? I hope you find work soon. This is suppose to be a really good job market.

You would think so, especially here in DC. I sent a follow up email to the recruiter twice last week, explaining the situation with the interpreter during the interview and that shouldn't affect my ability to do the tasks required of the position.

I do know that she seemed pretty enthusiastic in referring me to the hiring manager and she told me I had a really impressive resume. But, having sent two follow up emails without getting a response, I'm concerned I've been "ghosted" yet again. I mean, I don't know, they may still be debating a decision, but it shouldn't take more than a week to figure out whether or not to hire me.

In the meantime, I've continued sending out applications to both Federal and private companies, but nothing new in terms of interviews. Honestly, it just proves to me that deaf and hard of hearing candidates have far higher barriers to entry into the job market than not only the general public, but also among the disabled community.

I mean, I've got all the qualifications I need, I'm a reliable worker (never missed a day at my last full-time position), self-starter, competent communicator who knows how to run meetings, capable of delegating tasks and responsibilities and holding peers and subordinates accountable for their work. Even with the resume and qualifications, it seems that doesn't do much for me.

In 30 years, I've worked a wide variety of jobs and I've never been fired, and never been written up or had negative comments about my work. No matter what I'm doing, I always try to do it well.

If there was a negative for me, I guess it would be that I've never done any highly specialized work. Most of the positions I've held over the years have required working well with people, the ability to perform a wide variety of tasks, follow through, the ability to set short and long term goals and creating a plan to accomplish those goals.

I've always been a bit of a dreamer, big picture sort of guy. I like thinking about what's possible for an organization and not afraid to try new things. I no doubt can do detail-oriented tasks and perform assignments requiring precision, and I've done a lot of that well in the past. It's part of the reason I'm still working part time as an accounting assistant for a local law firm.

This honestly has been the most frustrating 6 months. I'm at a loss for what to do. I mean, if this is one of the hottest economies in the country, why would I uproot my family and go somewhere else where my odds of getting a job goes down? But, I can't afford to stay. I may have enough money to pay the rent in April, but I'm sol when most of my other bills hit mid-month.

To make matters worse, my daughter got sick and brought home this nasty upper respiratory virus, and of course, I got it from her. Had to go to the clinic to get checked out and tested for the flu, which fortunately was ruled out. I'm starting to come out of it now, so hopefully I'll be back to 100% in the next day or 2.

I really need a bit of good news on the job front. My wife and kids are worried and it's stressing all of us out. All I want is for the recruiter to call and give me some good news tomorrow. I don't think that's asking too much.

I'd be remiss not to say thank you, so I want to express my deepest appreciation to those who have donated and helped us get to this point. Your support matters to our family. I tell my wife and kids every time we receive a gift. It's humbling to know that there are people out there who do care. I wish you all the best!
