Top 4 Saints draft needs after latest free agency moves
By John Sigler | Saintswire
The New Orleans Saints have been busy in free agency, adding starters and quality backups all over the roster. The Saints have set themselves up well to go into the 2019 NFL Draft with plans of adding the best players available, rather than chase specific prospects at positions of need.
Still, some positions need more help than others. Here’s the four areas the Saints must focus on most on draft day.
Defensive tackle
Players under contract for 2019: Malcom Brown (starter), Taylor Stallworth, Sheldon Rankins (injured), David Onyemata (starter), Mario Edwards Jr., and Tomasi Laulile
This is the position where the Saints have made the most additions, but they may not be done. All they’ve really accomplished is upgrading their starting nose tackle and added a backup to the other starting spot, where Onyemata will fill in for Rankins to start the year but his contract is up after the season. Drafting a rookie to pair with Onyemata (and maybe replace him next year) until Rankins is back in action would be a wise move. This is a deep defensive line class, and if the right prospect is there at 62, the Saints could end up with their defensive line being set up for success for years to come.
Prospects to know: Jerry Tillery (Notre Dame), Khalen Saunders (Western Illinois), Renell Wren (Arizona State), and Dre’Mont Jones (Ohio State)
