Homeless situation....
I’m a big believer in States rights. If this is something you want done at the city level, I would support you wanting that. I think city and state government should have plenty of freedom to exercise such programs and projects. Where we will butt heads is when you start trying to force it at the federal level and make me spend my hard earned money on it.
There is almost nothing I would stand in the way of at the city and state level. Anything politically that I argue over is almost entirely at the Fed level.
I get that, but last year, only 11 states gave more to the federal government than they received back, which means that 39 states are in a yearly deficit situation. And my opinion is that most of them should set up their own program to get permanent housing established for their particular population of homelessness, and then increase that deficit that single year, to hopefully decrease it in subsequent years. I'm not necessarily speaking about a federal takeover of how the states handle the issue, but the reality is that it's going to cost way more than any state could reasonably expect to afford, so federal money will have to be involved.
In terms of your hard earned money, a crucial part of success is helping those who can't or won't do the same as you. In
A Christmas Carol for example, Scrooge is well within his rights to act indignant when his wealth is threatened by other factors. After all, he legitimately worked harder and longer hours than anyone else to acquire it. He earned every penny. But what did it buy him? Loneliness and grief.
And I'm not singling you out, as I've heard this same type of statement (e.g. "I work for my money", "they need to pay their fair share", "they can get a job just like me", etc) my whole life. Have even said similar a time or two, if I'm being honest. The idea of sharing is not in our DNA. It has to be taught, frequently and with purpose. But it is a part of our emotional development as members of society. To let go of the child like "hey that's mine!" type reaction that we all and I mean
ALL suffer from way too often. We're all tired. We mostly don't like having to go to work every single day. It puts us in a mood. And that mood makes us want to dismiss any potential idea to help those who won't walk that same path out of either envy or indignation. I'm not sure which works in each of our personal stances. But I think that, if we can get past that better, our society as a whole will be better off for it.
