Brees Injury Diagnosis MERGED (UPDATE: Drew expected to have surgery on torn ligament - out 6 weeks) (1 Viewer)

I'm willing to bet manning or Favre can still sling knockouts even after years of inaction.

Brees will get his reps in his sleep and not miss a single beat. #drewdat

That's the hope. It's one thing if you just haven't thrown in a month. It's another when you haven't even been able to even grip a football and are recovering from a ligament injury. All I'm saying is that even if he returns in 6 weeks, he may not be the same right away.

possibly -- but was Schefter's report ever confirmed by anyone associated with the Saints? Not saying Schefter isn't typically solid, but we didn't hear anything on this from Saints camp aside from Drew saying he was seeing a hand specialist. The actual findings of that meeting haven't been revealed by Brees or Saints staff. All we've heard directly from the Saints is Drew saying he planned to see a specialist and now Payton saying "He got an opinion and is now getting another one."

I do see it from your perspective that missing six games and getting cut open isn't something Drew is thrilled about -- but I still have growing concerns that the 6-8 week timetable the media has been running with was not directly from the hand doctor Drew saw or from Drew himself or Saints staff. It's possible that he was told the injury is severe enough to sideline him the entire year.
It’s GOT to be ligament tear based on how they were moving it around without him grimacing like a child. He didn’t flinch which , in my own experience is ligament tear (ligs attach bone, tendon/ muscle) so I’d put him on IR keep him out 8 wks min. and allow new blood into he 53 man!

Yes, but is THAT procedure performed laparoscopically? I am assuming the tape goes under the skin -- so do they need to split open his thumb like a banana peel to get the tape in place? Someone else posted earlier (a med school student IIRC) that whatever was done, it would be done with as small an incision as possible.

It is not done laparoscopically. An incision is made and the skin is peeled back to expose the tear. There are several studies to show that this procedure is much better than just using a suture anchor. One study cites a basketball player returning to full play 5 weeks post-surgery.

Here is how the procedure is performed with tape by Dr. Shin.

Basketball players hitting with that thumb repair is not comparable to a QB having to squeeze the ball and make precision throws. If he is back in the lineup before 8 weeks from yesterday, I will be surprised.

Right around 8 weeks from now is Atlanta at home, that's when we really need him.

I dont think anyone would want either of my hands.. I mean my right is probably more powerful than my left though.

Hey man, I'm not saying that there is a direct comparison. I was only citing what I read and that means it is much more effective than the standard procedure used. It could speed the process up- like the basketball player in the case study.

I'm all for a surgery with increased speed of recovery. Drew just needs to get it done quickly. The longer he waits the longer it takes to get back.

I know he is a warrior and hates to be on the sideline (one reason I think he won't want to coach after playing days are done), but he needs to make his decision quick.

I think everyone involved agrees with that - but it has to be an informed decision, so he's rounding out that info. I would be really surprised if he didn't have a course of action set by the end of today.

Do we know for a fact he hasn't had surgery yet?

My understanding is that Brees is expected to miss up to six games. They will know more after surgery.

Just got back from the gym. That's what Pete said, "Until the surgeon gets under the skin with a scope, he will not know the exact nature and extent of the injury. Recovery for pro athletes is so advanced now, what was thought impossible 10 years ago is not
I would happily donate my hand, but sadly would ruin my sex life ☹

Dying laughing over your comment. So much fresh honesty. Us men are not known for that about our little friends - lol
