So how can a side judge screw us on calls, other than the obvious blowing the whistle when it was a clear fumble-TD return?

Side judge was the position that screwed us in the championship game along with the Line Judge so there you go, plus it was the Referee that blew that whistle not the Side Judge on the fumble.
