[Merged] Well this should get us all excited

I don't really understand this. If I hold my hand in a neutral (relaxed) position my thumb is relatively close to my other fingers and palm. The further I move my thumb away from my fingers and palm, the more flexing that's required. I don't think a smaller ball is harder to grip and hold -- it would be nice if that were the case, but that really doesn't make sense. Bigger balls are harder to hold. Anyone who's held balls knows this.
Drew’s issue with the thumb from the start was gripping so he needs the mobility and strength to bring the thumb toward the palm and fingers. After any surgery you tend to focus on mobility/range of motion and then strengthening. A smaller ball has a smaller circumference meaning it’ll require more mobility to grab onto. I’m sure strengthening is still an issue as it is after any surgery. I see being able to firmly hold a smaller ball as him having the mobility in the thumb already. What’s left is strengthening.
