My first intro to rap was Mantronix. Recently heard an interview with Mannie Fresh who said that alot of his music ( NO Bounce ) was born out of listening to Mantronix. I think what we know from the 80s produced the 90s music. There wasnt much ( if any) "gansta rap" in the same manner in which NWA brought to the table. It was more stories, feel good raps until the Moe D/Cool J beefs started and even then , the rhymes were more wit and word play than death threats and killing.
I liked the lyrical work of Notorious B.I.G. for sure. He was witty. ( anytime we see someone in a black Yukon we assume its Arizona Ron).
I agree with the younger folks that the 90s produced more "diversity" from your basic rap structure to hardcore, gansta, hip-hop, reggae, with much more intricate rhymes. Very intelligent, very smart rhyming styles that were appealing. ( as opposed to the generic 80s raps of having fun/good time/girls/bragging etc )
ah what a great thread started here. Im an 80s rap fool. Raised on Run DMC, 2 Live Crew, Eric B and Rakim, Beastie Boys, EPMD, 3rd Bass, Kool G Rap and Polo, Kid n Play. They led to Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul....
Great music for sure
