Here's another problem with these - lack of transparency by the Chinese authorities. When the 'mystery illness' was first identified, Chinese authorities were shutting down all talk of it on Twitter and other social media in China.

So you never really know the full story.

You see some of that mistrust reflected in the expert community:

A report by MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College in London estimated that the number of cases in Wuhan city was likely to be closer to 1,700, than the official numbers. Chinese health authorities have not commented on the report.
