For you guys teaching yourselves my advice would be to go take lessons somewhere if even for a short time. Few things come out of that.....you will learn to play correctly so you don't get bad habits that stay with you forever, you'll learn excellent practice techniques that will help you learn faster, and if you're paying for something you'll be more inclined to practice it not to mention you'll get at a minimum 30 minutes a week dedicated just to the guitar.

That being said if your just dead set on teaching yourself. Finger exercises, finger exercises, and more finger exercises. Can't stress that enough. Your brain telling you to put your pinky on the 6th string does nothing until you can actually do it. Also alternating picking up and down as you're doing them.
