What is Payton up to?

Tendering him as a 1, no team is going to touch that - any team that needs a QB will draft inside the top 15 (With the exception of maybe Pittsburgh/Chicago at 18/19). No one is going to toss a top 15 pick for a 30 year old QB who has thrown 13 passes. If there was a bad team who in a prior year picked up a 2nd 1st rounder later in the round, maybe. Not the case this year. But as it is, every team from 15-32 are set at QB (again, Pit/Ch at18/19 may be the exception). 1st round tender, Hill will be a Saint in 2020. No mystery, no strategy. Its very simple. Tendering at a 1, Payton no BS believes Hill is QB of the future material.

Tendering him as a 2, all bets are off. This is what I think the Saints should do.

No one is going to throw massive amounts of money at Hill. Lets say Pittsburgh offers Hill 4 years 48-60 million. IF Payton believes Hill is the future QB, he just nabbed him for 12-15 million a year by matching the offer sheet. A full on steal. Hill doesn't pan out after a year, you are basically paying him nearly what you paid Bridgewater. If he plays lights out, Hill and the team would likely work on another contract to avoid Hill holding out. All of this is a win win for the Saints.

It would be in Hills best interest to just sign a 1 year deal with the Saints and play for the big contract next season.

Only if you're willing to trade him for the 64th pick in the draft.
