If Drew has retired this off-season, I’m pretty sure Taysom would be our starter now and his deal would have been for 3 or 4 seasons.

Sure. The Saints wanted to lock him in at his current price for another year because they know at a minimum he is worth that as the Swiss Army knife and change of pace QB and Hill didn't want to be locked in for another year at that price. I mean, if they had been offering real starting QB money, I'm sure Hill would have taken it.
