I'll use a simple example.
Feb 1 the USA had 8 confirmed cases (obviously we had more).
March 1 the USA had 30 confirmed cases.
April 1 the USA could have had approximately 500k-1M cases, but ended up with 213k confirmed cases.
May 1 the USA had 1.1Million confirmed cases.
As of yesterday we have 1.2M confirmed cases. So, in 4-5 days, we've added 100k new cases.
Now, let's peel off the deaths and reported recoveries. 71k deaths, almost 190k recovered. That leaves about 944k active known infections in the USA.
If we "just open up", which I really do hope most people aren't suggesting. We will be overwhelmed within a week or two.
"I'm not suggesting we get back down to 8-30 cases, but look at how fast those grew out of control. That level of "normal" is not something we can just go back to. We need a new "normal", at least for a while. Not without a massive testing effort, tracing (so yes, if they ask you where you've been, answer, or write it down), and effective quarantine of those infected and those at-risk should consider limiting exposure.
I suggest everyone get a little sun if they can. Call a friend. Call a parent or grand parent.
