COVID-19 Outbreak (Update: More than 2.9M cases and 132,313 deaths in US)

Update on Hawaii.

We entered phase 1 of reopening yesterday statewide.

There are 0 active cases on Kauai.

Only 2 active here on Big Island.

Several still active on Maui and Oahu.

We also have the highest unemployment rate in the country at 35%.

Since the vast majority of those jobs are tourism related im not sure how much of an economy we will have until people can travel here again.

The lieutenant gov. is also a local ER doctor in the town where I live. He told one of my patients they are considering requiring covid testing 72 hours in advance for anyone wanting to enter the state. I'm not sure if they will lift the current 14 day quarantine for anyone flying into the islands with the testing. The 14 day quarantine is for anyone flying between any island or coming from out of state. I thought they actually waited 2 weeks late to implement that order. We probably wouldn't have had any cases here if they had.

Also made a Costco trip today. They had most things but it was sparse. Lot of the upper paler holding areas are empty. Kind of spooky to see so little in the store. Not sure we are going to stay out here too much longer. We don't want to get caught on an island in a huge food shortage. Plus the economy appears wrecked for an extremely long time.

The quarantine issue is a real problem for places that have the ability to isolate but also depend on outsiders for economic activity. What does 14-day quarantine mean in HI?

I have seen similar restrictions at county lines at some places in the states. But does that mean the person has to hole up in some residence and can't even go to the store or a walk outside off their residence? For example, I know someone that wants to go to their rental property (condo) in the mountains of North Carolina. They own the property but they can't go there because the county has a strict 14-day quarantine for anyone coming in to stay overnight in the county. It's a significant fine and the word is being spread that it is vigorously enforced.

Legality aside, that sends a strong message to stay out - no one is going to travel into a place where they then can't do anything (including groceries) for two weeks.
