It gets weirder and weirder by the day that we're in the midst of the most compelling national crisis of most of our lifetimes and the president isn't really talking much about it, has farmed out management of it to a team designed to be impotent, and is basically blowing it off.

It's just downright bizarre. As someone who spent years studying American history - recent American history (20th Century) - I struggle with imagining how this episode is going to be treated by history. Not well, I imagine.

"That Japanese thing in Hawaii...lovely island, you know. Everybody says so, gorgeous girls in those grass skirts. There's nothing underneath, did you know that? I did a pageant there one time, nothing but grass over that arse, believe me. It was a great pageant, we'll do it again soon, these Japs will disappear, no staying power, you'll see. One day we'll all be asking hey, whatever happened to that ToeJoe guy?"

Here's a look at states with the hottest average summer temperatures. The states with the white dots are also the states in the top 10 for Covid cases per 100k.

Unfortunately, the 10 states are also some of the most Republican leaning states in the country as well and we know the politically driven issues with social distancing, reopening economies and masks also plays a huge part in this and we do not have a state in the top 10 that is Democratic. The Democratic state with the highest case load is California with second place going to Delaware. The two Democratic states that have the hottest summers? California and Delaware. California aslo has one of the most diverse climates of any state in the country. Southern California is very hot while northern California tends to be cooler and along the coast is moderated by cool pacific ocean temps. Then in the mountains in East California it is cool. The breakdown in California trends in that same general direction with Southern California being the hottest and highest concentration of Covid while the Eastern part of the state has the lowest temps and covid density.

The Republican states with the coldest average temps are Alaska, Maine, Wyoming and Idaho. Alaska, Maine and Wyoming are among the lowest covid density states in the country while Idaho is 15th in covid. However, like California, idaho has a diverse climate and Boise has an average high temperature in the month of July in the 90's and Idaho's covid density is focused right over Boise.

Arizona is only #1 because they don't play anybody. SEC! SEC!

What are y'all's opinions of face shields instead of masks. I'm seeing quite a few of them (mostly at one place in particular in Metaire, and they don't seem like they would be as effective as masks (either for the wearer or the rest of us), but people seem fine with them and I guess they meet the requirements of the mask mandate.

I keep picturing somebody with one good sneeze gobbing up their face shield and having to wipe it all off. :covri:

I think they are better than nothing since they do at least slow down the speed of the exhillation, but they don't filter anything. And, I think they are really designed to stop droplets from getting in the eyes, not to stop inhiliation or limited exhillation. IIRC, in hospitals they are used in conjunction with masks, not in place of masks, when dealing with people who have communicable diseases.
