Better Toto Song: Africa or Rosanna?
Toto are amazing. This is like asking me to pick a favourite child (I assume, I don’t have kids). Steve Lukather doesn’t get the recognition he deserves as one of the greatest guitarists ever. How many number one tracks has he played on? Then throw in, at various stages, David Paich, Bobby Kimball, Joseph Williams, Steve/Jeff/Mike Porcaro ... heck, I even liked Isolation with Fergie Fredriksen.
I was fortunate enough to get VIP tickets to meet Luke, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams for their show in Melbourne in January 2019 just before they called it a day for a second (and maybe last) time. They were great and they drew twice the crowd that turned out to see them when I went to the Falling in Between tour in 2008. You can’t understate the impact the Weezer cover of Africa had on their popularity either, particularly amongst the younger crowd. I strangely got into them as a teenager in the early 00s because my mate’s older brother is/was a guitar aficionado and put me on to a heap of 80s guitarists from Luke to Reb Beach to Nuno Bettencourt. But both of us would probably agree that Lukather and Toto are on our personal Mt Rushmore.
Here’s a picture of them playing at Falls Festival which is a New Years festival for a young crowd - 18 to 30 - at the turn of 2019
Coincidental timing with this thread - I’m bringing home a puppy in a few weeks. Her name? Rosanna (or Rosie for short). 100% named after the song.
Would have been Hokie, Reggie or Alvin for a boy but I digress.
Anyway, on that basis, I’ll lean Rosanna - just.
