This why Jameis is not starting (1 Viewer)

William of Ockham (/ˈɒkəm/; also Occam, from Latin: Gulielmus Occamus; c. 1287 – 1347) was an English Franciscan friar, scholastic philosopher, and theologian. He is considered to be one of the major figures of medieval thought and was at the center of the major intellectual and political controversies of the 14th century. He is commonly known for Ockham's or alternatively Occam's razor, the methodological principle that bears his name, and also produced significant works on logic, physics, and theology.
Thanks, learnt something. I assumed it was Occam due to the more common usage (at least where I am from) of Occam's Razor. Didn't realise that it was actually "Ockham" and that the "Ockham" part of his name actually refers to a place of birth. Sounded like some form of processed meat substitute.

Winston takes a lot of risks just like the play the OP posted but there was a time when Brees took a ton of chances like that as well. He learned over time that while the kill shot into 3 x coverage makes for good highlights (either an amazing backbreaking play or a pick for the other team) that you can take that check down on the left that would have picked some yardage, is safer and keeps the ball moving. He became a more patient player. Winston can grow into that he has all the tools to get there he just needs to learn there is a time to take chances and a time you don’t need to force things in there. You don’t get there overnight.
Winston had a plethora of coaches and different offensive styles to adjust to every year in Tampa he never really had the time in a stable environment to learn and develop. Given sometime here I think he could easily develop into a more situationally aware QB. He has all the tools physically and you can see a change in his maturity as well.
Stability, good coaching and the talent level we have here make it easier for him to grow as a player. He just has to keep plugging along. Hopefully he sticks around and takes advantage of what the Saints can offer him.

Personally, I think it just comes down to which guy was more likely to help the team win the game last week against the F'clowns. With Taysom, you still have a huge amount of plays in the offense that you can run and that he knows (and by saying "knows," I mean knows inside and out and is comfortable with). You also have a recent fumbling issue, let's be honest. With Winston, you have a much more limited number of plays that he knows and you have a recent INT issue.

Heck, Payton may have even put Winston out there in the 2nd half of the 49'ers game because he knew that Hill would be the starter for the next few games and didn't want to risk getting him injured (maybe even due to being unfamiliar with a play call or protection) in the 2nd half of a game that was pretty firmly in hand against an overmatched opponent. Now I'm not saying he put Jameis out there as a sacrificial lamb, only that he effectively pulled his starter, as any college team would up by a sufficient margin. It just so happened that his starter was his #2 because his starter had just gone down with an injury. If Brees was only out for that game and expected to be able to play against the Falcons, I would bet Hill would have been the one to play the 2nd half against the 9'ers.

Payton has confirmed in at least two interviews since Atlanta that it was always the plan to insert Jameis if Drew goes down in a game and then to prep Taysom for the following week.

The reason he offered was that he did not want to lose the Taysom plays already installed and that Jameis was the one that had practiced the Drew play sheet the previous week.

The int issue has kind of overshadowed it, but Jameis has a fumbling issue as well. I can forgive some of the ints from last year because of the way Arians limits checkdown plays. Here are some fumbling stats for Jameis:

Fumbles

2020New Orleans Saints2
2019Tampa Bay Buccaneers1612503
2018Tampa Bay Buccaneers117302
2017Tampa Bay Buccaneers1315707
2016Tampa Bay Buccaneers161060300

All that being the case ( and ints are not just recent) I think the guy has a ton of potential. It is too early to see what CSP & Drew might do to improve his game, but I see a return to a starting QB level of talent if he hangs in there and takes what he learns here to heart.

9/10 people are gonna fail that task of coming in hot off the bench for months & expect to go kick arse out there on pass 1 . It would seem that TH has a higher floor than Winston . Winston could find himself starting somewhere and being benched immediately for turnovers , again.

Payton has had 3+ years to work with Taysom. Less than one season with no preseason to work with Winston. I reckon that could have some bearing as opposed to just 9 passes.

Payton chose Taysom last week. We will see today who he chose.

The "why" has descended into tinfoil-hat conspiracy territory.
