Yes by adding a single wild card team because they had 3 divisions in each conference so they gave the Dolphins coached by Shula a second chance to win a road game to prove they deserve a spot because they needed a 4th team.
Then they added a second wild card team and now a third. At no point did they deserve a home game.
The NFL began with two divisions and just those two division winners facing off for the majority of the NFL seasons with no other game other than division matches when the two division teams were tied for first.
