Police Shootings / Possible Abuse Threads [merged] (8 Viewers)

Yea, as that looks, the girl in pink is literally about to be stabbed. I don't see how the cop avoids shooting at that point.

Yeah. I'm wondering if a taser would be appropriate in this case? Not sure if they're equipped with them in this case tho.

This one is sad, but not abuse imho. I feel the officer was in a lose lose position. If he tries to use the taser and she stabs the other girl anyway, folks would be upset at him for that decision. You've got so much chaos around the scene with folks not standing down after the officers arrived. IMHO he had no choice other than to deploy lethal force.

I don't fault him based on what I've seen, but there should be a review as I'm reasonably certain there will be.

I swear if I hadn't posted the story, I wouldn't have watched. I can rarely stomach the videos without having some sort of minor breakdown.

I refuse to watch again but I can't tell if his gun was already drawn or if he pulled it out when he saw her with the knife. But I don't know how else you stop her from stabbing the girl in pink. Literally, SMH.
From what I can tell, the officer gets out of his car with his gun holstered. He's trying to access the situation and from around a vehicle, a lady comes crashing into the ground in front of him and a girl with a knife is pursuing her. The officer then draws his weapon. Some guy comes over and kicks the girl that fell to the ground and the girl with the knife then charges another female wearing pink who's pinned up against a car. She leans away from the girl with the knife and puts her leg up as a defense mechanism. The girl pulls her arm with the knife back likes shes winding up for a hard stab and the officer shoots her. I don't know how much the officer knew about the situation or if he just pulled up when the footage starts, but it seemed like he was trying to save the lady in pink's life in that moment.

Police have to be able to match the threat. In this case, the officer sees an assailant going after somebody with a deadly weapon and he uses deadly force. It is heartbreaking that a fifteen year old is dead as a result of a heated moment, but if that was one of my family members being threatened in that way, I'd hope the police responded as quickly and forcefully.

I'm often critical of police in use-of-force situations but my reaction upon seeing the bodycam footage is that it depicts the urgency and severity of the threat that this officer had to respond to.

We are in such a demented place that if the cop had just let her stab the other girl to death it would have simply been a minor/local news story.

Imagine being the girl in pink having protestors descend onto the city chanting Black Lives Matter.

I imagine she'll be thinking about her life, processing a person being shot in front of her, thinking that a bullet could've hit her, and hopefully reassessing the things that put her in that situation, i.e. bullying. A whole lot of stuff not related to a protest. You'll be worried about the protest.

let's just be VERY clear that many of you are claiming that Ma'khia Bryant does not have the right to defend herself

there was a 911 call says one girl is being attacked by 3 other girls - that's the information the office is going in with
y'all are saying that this officer used sound judgment at the scene

- let me ask you to be honest for a moment. hypothetical: you are being attacked by a guy with a knife; you call 911 to report; knife slips out of guy's hand and you pick it up - he keeps coming after you; you swing the knife at him to keep him back; cop rolls up and shoots you...your honest last though was "well...he was in a lose, lose situation"
i can promise you, that would not be how you would see this as the victim

Have you watched the bodycam footage?

I haven't given my opinion of the incident as a whole, only my recap of what I saw on the video. At the start of the video, the girl in pink is just standing by the road talking to others when the officer gets out of his car. I have no idea what happened before, but she was not actively engaged in a fight as it appeared to that officer. She was a by-stander who the girl with the knife went after right in front of the officer. He didn't shoot the guy who kicked a girl that was down, so I have to think he's not just gunning people down for no reason just for fighting.

Just trying to be clear of what the video shows.

Just based on the clip, I doubt he was able to discern the victim from the perp. I probably would've thought the girl with the knife was the perp mentioned in the call to 911.

Like someone said, she was winding up for a vicious stab, it was beyond a swing at that point.

As far the hypothetical, I'd have a completely different POV being the actual victim. I'd be livid if I lived to tell about it. But as a observer only, I literally have a different perspective.

We all play a part in how people are treated in a society. That girl will need to make an honest assessment of her part just as we all need to do. Let's hope she can be more honest with herself than most people.

Where are you all getting information that the girl in pink was even involved in the incident?
