What are you reading?
Just finished book four of Dan Simmon’s Hyperion Cantos series, “Rise of Endymion” There are some things about the series I didn’t care for. I get the tie in with poetry but I found the poems to be a hard read. There were some parts were Simmons seems to drone on a bit about the surroundings and the people in a setting. He’ll make some fairly long lists and I find myself tying to skip ahead. There are also some plot threads that were predictable. The moment Aenea mentioned the “Observers” I knew the A. Bettik had to be one of them.
But these are nit picking over four fairly long books. I say that because I very much enjoyed all four. I keep wondering why the heck these haven’t been made into a movie. Is someone waiting for Simmons to die or something? The 2nd book, “Fall of Hyperion” was my favorite. It had a lot of intrigue and action. The 1st book, “Hyperion” with its short stories from each of the Shrike pilgrams was my 2nd favorite. ”Endymion” being a close 3rd.
Anyways, time to decide on my next reading adventure. When I was younger, I was an insatiable reader. I read three sets of World Book Encyclopedia. Two in Elementary school and one in Jr High. I fell back on my reading over the years with most coming from technical manuals, some occasional science books, and the occasional Star Wars novel. The announcement of the upcoming Dune movie got me to rewatch the original movie and then dive into all of Herbert’s Dune novels. That led me to the Foundation series and then of course to Hyperion. ‘
Now I’m going to read Thrawn Ascendancy. I’m mostly reading it because I love Timothy Zahn’s work with that character. I already have it on my Kindle app so I want to clear it.
