It is a figure of speech, to denote a perceived lack of professionalism. Has nothing to do with how much is being paid, or that it is even paid at all.
That's from another thread... good, you are paying attention! In any case, it is a true statement, is it not? There are too many people who make a living out of talking about sports on multiple media platforms, and they have to complete for subscriptions, clicks, and air time, so they over analyze every bit of info they get no matter how trivial the information is, and often create drama where there isn't any.
But hey, if they make money directly (subscription) or indirectly (clicks, air time) out of it because people like you enjoy the drama and/or the poor reporting, more power to them!
