I think where he killed himself, however he did it, he didn't think about it becoming underwater in a few days or weeks. OR maybe somebody did kill him. I would have wanted to.

I think he fancied himself being an outdoorsman because of his concern for the environment (which isn't worth much if you're not equally concerned about human life), I don't think he was one. Or at least not a "hiding out and roughing it" outdoorsman. Basically, this dude failed at being a human.

So, if I understand you correctly, you think Brian had an extreme handicap?!?! Serious mental issues, so was basically an adult child, or possibly an adult infant? How did he manage to graduate high school (I presume), and had enough emotionally capacity to bring in Gabby, and convince the police he was not a threat? There is an extreme gap between empathy and intelligence?
