What's with coach interview "permission"?

If I am not mistaken, permission is only needed for a lateral or lower move. I think the league mandates that permission is not required when the move allows a coach to obtain a higher position.

Thus the ability to go from coordinator to head coach, without needing permission.

This is pretty much the way I understand it as well... if it is an equal or lesser position, permission is needed, if it is a promotion, even the popular "assistant Head Coach" title, than Permission is not needed.

So...

Assistant to Assistant = Permission Needed

Assistant to Coordinator/Head Coach/Assistant-Head Coach = No Permission needed.

Something along these lines happened back when Haslett was our assistant Coach LBers?) and Monte Kiffin was our Defensive Coordinator... The Bucs wanted Haslett to be their Coordinator (in hind-site maybe we should have let him go), the deal was basically done and the Saints said wait, how about you take Kiffin (the "Older" coordinator) and we promote Haslett (Young Wipper-snapper) to the Defensive Coordinator position. The Bucs took Kiffin in a kind of Coach trade, but not a real trade...
