Those articles don't say masks are ineffective, they say cloth masks are inferior to n95 masks. When they mentioned cloth masks, they mentioned ones made from t shirts and jeans, not the lined cotton masks that most used. They actually mentioned surgical masks worked well as long as you wore them correctly, which would be the same for even the n95s.
