Saints Penning presser: “If the guy across from you doesn’t hate you, you’re not doing your job!” (1 Viewer)

But last night in pass protection, against second- and possibly third-unit players, he looked lost.
'He looked lost'? What does that even mean? He looked like he didn't know where he was? Looked like he was in a strange place? Looked like he had no clue what he was doing? That's pointless hyperbole.

He got beat a few times in pass protection. Not totally unexpected given that he's going through a significant adjustment. We all would have preferred him to win every play, and it's up to him to apply the techniques he's being taught, but did he look lost? No.

Penning needs to learn pass pro techniques. He was a run blocking mauler at N. Iowa and has the physical tools to be a good NFL lineman, but he needs the coaching. Remember how raw Davenport, who also came from a small football program (UTSA) was when he was drafted, but when he's healthy he's now a beast. Penning could follow a similar trajectory, and will hopefully not have the injury issues Davenport has had. We just have to be patient.

Nah, I was fine with Hurst. It wasn't his best night, he did give up ground but he was what he needed to be on majority of his plays.
Hurst played one single drive. If Dalton wasn’t getting rid of the ball so quickly, Hurst would’ve given up 2 sacks. He was getting tossed around.

His first start was against Carolina. He struggled that game but after that he became the one best on the league.
Right. But I specifically remember him replacing Brown in the middle of the Rams game the week before. That was the game that Payton said he had seen enough of Charles Brown.

Too many focus on his attitude and not on his lack of technique. He has to adjust to NFL talent coming from a small school.

TCU Dan had a great analysis of Penning: liked his athleticism and attitude, but noted that his college coaching had been, frankly, terrible: Penning was getting by on superior strength against inferior competition, and he had never been taught even the fundamentals of how to play offensive tackle. So he clearly has a LOT to learn. But he has great coaches now, and he seems eager to learn, and Dan thought that he would ultimately do very well. He might not be ready to start early in the season, but -- again according to Dan -- Hurst is a capable left tackle, though not the pro bowl talent we lost; still, Hurst is more likely to stay healthy, and continuity on the offensive line is a very big deal. But I would like to hear more from TCU Dan (and from Belfast Saint? who also knows a great deal about offensive line play) following what was -- no doubt -- a very bad performance by Penning. My totally worthless opinion: Penning will be an excellent left tackle, but it will take a year; and Hurst will hold the fort until then.

This is a reasonable/rational take IMO. Let’s see how much Penning improves between now and the beginning of the season….I mean there is a chance he will improve, right?

We will see…..
