Congratulations for your father. My father walked into Oschner with a heart issue because Oschner's had such a high success rate with heart surgery. They then proceeded to play with my dads medications until they got his numbers all out of whack, which then put my father into a "high risk" category. The reason Oschner's has such a high success rate is because they do not treat folks that are high risk. At this point they informed us there was nothing else they could do and they would make dad comfortable for the end. Two weeks earlier my dad WALKED into Oschner's, they screwed up his meds, then told us they would make him comfortable.

Ultimately we flew my dad to Texas Heart institute, dad had his surgery, and died a month later. I am glad you were able to get 20 extra years with your dad. I wish things had worked out like that with mine.

Sorry to hear that and sorry for your loss. The last time I spoke to my dad was actually at Oschner in January 2015 on his birthday. Since he had a transplant there, he'd have to drive down there (lived in Vicksburg since 1996) for checkups or before any major medical procedure. He was there to get clearance for a shoulder surgery, but ended up having heart and other issues. They initially thought he made need another transplant, but he wasn't healthy enough for one. They decided to check his blood and it turned out he had Acute Myeloid Leukemia and he pretty much instantly went downhill after that. He was released the Friday after his birthday with information for hospice and for an oncologist. They (mainly Mom since my dad was pretty much out of it) decided to call hospice and on Monday when the hospice was there setting up a bed, he passed a week after his birthday and the last day I spoke to him.

I know that the day my dad got his heart transplant that someone else lost their life, that is not lost on me and my family.

Personally, I have nothing against Oschner and in fact and very thankful for everything they did over the years. I do understand that not everyone has had the same experience.
