I think the theory people have that Payton and Loomis talked about this and Payton said he needed a break, and that he fully intended on coming back to coach again, is 100% dead on. Payton's been with the team since 2006 which is absolutely insane in NFL coaching years. Loomis told Payton he's not trading him for anything less than a first and I am sure Payton understood. I think that's why Loomis showed ZERO care to just hurling picks around in the last draft to grab Olave. Loomis knew Payton was always coming back and that at least half the league would be calling to see what the cost would be, he knew he was going to have a lot of future picks to play with.
