in both instances in today's early match, the forward was a good step or 2 past his man - instinctually that would be offsides
put it was a defender 15' away from the ball who played him onsides with a sloppy line
3-4 years ago side judge would have raised flags on both of those and have cost cameroon 2pts

I see both sides of it. On one hand it's ridiculous and players can and have gotten injured in passages of play that were always going to be ruled offsides but on the other scenarios like you described played out and you're glad they kept the flag down.

I do think the rule needs amending somehow, at the very least anything you can't legally handle the ball with (hands and arms mainly but I think shoulder's are a grey area) shouldn't count as offside in my opinion.
