Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023

That said, I had to wonder how he felt this year watching his beloved team turn into a laughingstock & a dumpster fire. He HAD to be imagining what he would do to fix all the problems as they unfolded throughout the season. Does that translate into actually WANTING to take these matters back into his own hands? I still believe that's unlikely. But it's not impossible that he could be so moved.
I think he's legitimately been doing this, even on a micromanaged play-by-play in a series while watching the game live, basis. Like Drew's "mental reps", I'd bet he was taking "mental coaching reps" during game and probably cringed at the offensive play calling. It would not surprise me at all for him to be thinking, "I would have made X adjustment in game 1, had Y game plan for game 2, etc... and had us at 9-4, running away with the division!"
