I guess the hypothetical becomes:

Would it be better to have Payton back for two years, and only two years, or trade his rights in the offseason for whatever the team can get?

I can see that side. I guess it’s a matter of opinion.

Personally, I’d much rather have him back without any guarantees. Either we get a QB in 23 and he gets to start molding, or we’re positioned for a top draft QB in 24, who he gets to pick and work with. To me, even that would be more valuable than a draft pick or two.
