Payton asked Jeff Duncan to put this story out there in order to raise his own value with other suitors like the Cowboys, Chargers, Cardinals. Why aren't the Saints putting a cabash on it? Because it helps them to raise his value. Payton had every opportunity to take a one year break from coaching and then come back to the Saints. Instead, he created a parade. I don't think anyone is going to want him unless it's the Cowboys.
I don't buy that at all. Dallas is hardly the only team out there who would want him. There are clearly other teams who would make good offers for his services. He's gonna be one of the most sought after coaches this offseason.
Payton had his reasons for leaving. I really don't much care what they were. Doesn't really matter at this point. He has some decisions to make and that includes whether he goes back to the Saints, or pushes for a trade to another team.
The Saints front office should and I think will make a play to get the most out of a trade or make an offer to keep him on board with an extension. He's gonna make a mint either way.
I'd prefer he return and coach with us because it solves a lot of issues on the coaching side and maybe it helps restore the players' confidence in the organization.
That said, if he goes elsewhere, then getting a good trade offer has to be top priority.
