Jeff Duncan on Sean Payton 2023

Frankly, I would still take the two years.
It may be short term for Payton, but he probably will build the team for the next guy.

The current circumstances have created a desperation about the future of the team so I can understand your view. It would certainly be preferable to what we have now.

If it did work out that Payton came back and only coached through 2024, I think chances are pretty good we'd end up feeling about that like we did after the all-in years through the end of Drew's career; might have made sense at the time but didn't come out of it with much to show.

Payton played a major role in building this current team and while most of us can agree about the abysmal job Allen has done, most head coaches end up failing. I'm not sure what we should realistically expect Payton to accomplish over the next couple of seasons that would set the next guy up much better. If, hypothetically, Payton was coaching out the current deal, I'm not even sure you get the cultural benefits in the lockerroom. Players aren't dumb to that. I think success depends on a certain amount of perceived stability and longterm strategy. That wouldn't exist on a two year stint.

If Payton did come back and sign an extension, great!
