Are the Saints planning to tank in 2023?

This. I think the SP/Brees era created a mirage of the organization as a whole suddenly being great, when in reality, it had simply lucked into HOF talent at two key spots.

There were signs even throughout that golden era that we had no idea what we were doing. Thankfully, we figured out how to win at least one championship despite all the constant obvious errors the organization has always been prone to.

Now with those guys out of the building, the warts are starting to show again, and quite honestly, may have played a role in why SP was ready to jump ship.
There are two periods in this organization’s history.
-The Meacom Years- Which I think you’re referring to. The Saints were horribly mismanaged by a trust fund kid in his late 20s/early 30s.
- The Benson Years- The Saints have been well managed during this time frame from 1985 to the present. Under the Bensons, the franchise has had two long term coaches in Jim Mora, who was unfortunately placed in the same division as the Montana/Young 49ers, and Sean Payton, who brought the franchise a Super Bowl title.
Out of the 38 seasons with the Bensons at the head of the franchise, 27 of those seasons have been with one of those two coaches.

Those two eras are completely different and the Meacom Years shouldn’t cast this shadow thirty eight years after he sold the team.
