Would you be okay with the Saints giving up pick 29 and future assets for Jeffrey Simmons?

My initial reaction was "Absolutely!" Great player and only 25 years old. Then the devil's advocate in me entered into it. When it comes to stud Defensive Tackles with the Titans, I can't help but think of Albert Haynesworth. All world with the Titans, and then a complete bust once he hit FA and signed a 7-yr, $100 million deal with the Redskins. So that risk certainly has precedent.

Were Simmons a free agent, which he is not, I would lean towards drafting a hungry young DT instead of trying to sign him to a huge deal and skip that risk, but he has a season left on his rookie deal. If the Saints were to trade for Simmons I would bet that they wouldn't give up an early pick without working out a long term deal first being that he will be in the last year of his rookie contract, which won't be cheap! That's a gamble.

Considering the cost & risk, I would likely still take my chances with drafting a rookie DT or two instead of trading for Simmons. Sure! There are no guarantees that the draft pick/s will work out, but the same goes with Simmons as to how he performs after landing that fat 2nd contract. That being said, I wouldn't cry about it at all were the Saints to trade for him.
